Actually, English is not my native language - so, I am sorry.
I've set default codepage to 65001.
Now I open two almost identical files with mostly latin1 characters and a small amount of cyrillic. The first one uses utf-8, the second one - cp1251 (I've simply forgotten to run iconv).

I've tried the FAQ recipe and found that one cannot set explicit codepages for different files.
But what is much worse, when using unicode cp and the file is for ex. latin with some cp1251 characters - CP1251 CHRACTERS WILL BE DISCARDED AND UPON SAVING THOSE CHARACTERS ARE LOST without any warning!

I think this is a good idea to set winmerge default codepage to 65001 and/or make a small comment in the corresponding dialog that cp65001 equals to utf-8.
(Actually being a win/linux sysadmin, I didn't know that, but it's a question, if it's my fault ;) )
Also, concerning the answers in FAQ - putting encoding info inside html files (meta tag) is considered a bad practice as web...

What should I do to force winmergeu.exe on w2k to treat one or both files as utf-8?
The files are .php -s with cyrillic.
