You brought good ideas.. but I can't figure out a map with Units... 'cause units are always moving. And with fog-of-war you woudln't be able to see them. But.. making use of your idea, I suggest this:
- Trade maps of explored terrain untill that point.
- Trade maps including colonies untill that point.
- Trade maps continuously from that point on. For example: Everything you explore, the...

As we are now able to play on real maps(like America Map) it would be good to have on map editor an option to restrict in what area each indian nation would be found.. it would give more realism to the game. :)

When you watch Pirates of the Caribbean we remember that ships could attack colonies... so.. why not allow it? They could even take colonies... is not difficult to imagine it. A ship bombs a colonie.. when all its defense is down.. the colony is controlled. What u think? A good aspect of that ships would be more active in wars. i agree with him.
if you get colonization america map u will understand...
i think he means that we don't explore maps because it is too wide... it would be better if X/Y ratio would be smaller than 1 (X and Y axis).. so the map is taller instead of wider.

It would be nice to have Geographic Coordinates on screen showing the coordinates for the selected tiles... Mainly when you are playing a multiplayer and, for some reason, you need to give a certain location to someone. I think Colonization had it.

Wouldn't it be nice if we got a Tutorial Game? Or more information at the begginning? At least to teach how to move, build a colony.. how to improve colony... etc... could be an option.. that u could enable before game starts.

When any colonist learn something from a teacher.. the message do not mention in which colony that happenned. That's because we're using the same tag that we use for soldiers who become veteran soldiers... that's the line in use now:
model.unit.unitImproved=%nation% %oldName% has become %newName%.
