Using duplicity_0.6.04-1~bpo50+1_amd64.deb from debian lenny backports now.
A full backup worked without problem after upgrading to that version.

Thanks for the "lenny package outdated" notice (should've guessed it :).
I am trying now with:
http://packages.debian.org/lenny-backports/utils/duplicity
(prefering packages for that server over manual stuff)

BTW, on the ftp backup space, I see about 810 backup volumes with 5MB each.
This was the first backup with duply ever, a full backup.
