In addition to Topcased, other open source alternatives which are relatively full featured include ArgoEclipse (which I lead at http://argoeclipse.tigris.org), ArgoUML, and Papyrus.
From my point of view, the main issue with StarUML isn't the implementation language (Delphi), but the fact that it depends on commercially licensed closed source components. That isn't really an open source...

A Java 5 (aka 1.5) JVM won't run classes compiled with a Java 6 compiler. It would be more obvious if the JVM included the actual version numbers in the error messages, but that's what's going on.
The reason that your commercial apps work is that they take a conservative approach to forcing users to upgrade. They are probably compiled with Java 5 or 1.4.
