The server serves its keyboard and mouse to the client. There's no way around that.
But running the client on the media PC and the server on the netbook should work just fine. If the client can't connect to the server, it retries every so often in increasing intervals up to I believe every minute, and then continues to try every minute after that. Oh.. then SynergyKM doesn't do links like the Windows version... Unfortunately, I have no SynergyKM experience, but it can't be too hard, right? ;-) Maybe try this...

Basically, you need to tell it that the PC is both left and right of the iMac, and I think that would do it...

Oh.. I see! My apologies! Your PC monitors are actually opposite of those other situations, so no swapping of the orientation of the PC monitors should be necessary. And I think these links should work:
PC is right of iMac
iMac is left of PC
PC is left of iMac
iMac is right of PC
