I'd like to mention that with the change from Gaim to Pidgin, this will still work for users who find themselves in an environment filtering by version or client ID. Pidgin keeps its accounts file in a different location: "~/.purple/accounts.xml"

While that was originally written for Gaim, you can find the same accounts.xml file in ~/.purple/accounts.xml and apply the suggested entries.
I've just committed a change to Pidgin to specify updated values as the defaults to the Meanwhile library...
