RealTerm SHORTCUTs are, in effect, the "batch files" that you're looking for.
To automatically run customized RealTerm windows, do the following (this assumes that you're using WinXP. Other OS's will be similar):
1) Place a shortcut to RealTerm on your desktop.
2) Right-click on the shortcut.
3) Click the SHORTCUT tab.
4) The TARGET box can be edited with your desired startup...

I thought I was probably overlooking something obvious when I posed that question, being a fairly new user and all. The lack of replies is telling me that I really can't do what I had hoped, though. I've tried everything I can think of with no luck.
Do the RealTerm authors monitor this forum? If so, i wish they would comment, or at least consider a "delayed send" command in the...

To anyone who is interested, I bought a Sabrent 1 Ft USB 2.0 to Serial DB9 Male RS-232 Cable Adapter from Tiger Direct, part # SBT-USC1M, for $10. It seems to work just fine with my laptop's USB1 port.

Using the command line (actually, setting the target line in the shortcut's properties), is there a way to specify a SEND file ('Dump File to Port') without having it automatically begin sending?
I'm using this command:
'SENDFILE=C:\bin\8kbas.bin '
which does indeed load the file into the Dump File box. But it immediately begins sending that file. I need to do a few preliminary manual...

Crun,
Thanks for the info. I'm currently using my desktop PC's serial port, but as soon as possible, I'll get a converter and try to use the laptop again as you have suggested.
I've done a little checking on the web, and I think that many of those USB-to-rs232 converters require a USB 2 port. My HP has a v1.1 USB.

I want to use my HP notebook computer as a dumb terminal for my Altair 8800b computer (yes, the one made in ~1977). The Altair's RS232 serial port is set up as 9600/N/8/1, and I have no problem communicating via my antique ADM3 terminal. My problem is that it was only after I installed and ran RealTerm that I realized that my HP doesn't have a serial (COM) port- just a LPT printer port USB1...
