Thanks for a great product which really is needed now when Invitrogen has made their "freeware" not-so-free ;)
The thing I need help with is to figure out how to download the entire source code tree for the most recent version using CVS (I have only compiled from source using tarballs before)
(I have actually used the win version via Wine lately just to avoid the dependency hell...

Perhaps the Vector NTI alternative GENtle ( http://gentle.magnusmanske.de/ ) could be packed for SciBuntu? The proprietary Vector NTI has been an important tool for basically every molecular biologist due to its free academic licence. Recently, Invitrogen has however changed its licencing terms for the next version and lots of scientists are quite angry...
I feel that GENtle is quite mature...

Perhaps this project could build upon GENtle (http://gentle.magnusmanske.de/) which is GPLed and seems to be quite mature.
