I have implemented something similar to what you describe. I have not tried to run it in GAE (yet), but I plan on doing that soon.
I currently have an AMI running sphinx4 in Amazon's Ec2. The server provides a restful style API (and also SOAP API -- which is still under development). Adding GAE support should be a pretty easy next step. Do you think that GAE would be preferable over...
