I think wikis work best when they're mostly open (with key pages protected using Mediawiki's protect feature), and that Wikipedia is a good example of what can happen with a (mostly) open wiki. It's also tough for small/new projects to get new users to contribute and I think an open wiki is...

Is there any possibility that the hosted Mediawiki permissions will be globally changed in the future to default to allowing anyone to edit (along the lines of how Wikipedia has their permissions set up)?
