The remote wget facility seems unstable and breaks for url's composed of more complex paths. papco_cdf break; lanl_geo_ep breaks, but omni seems to work fine.
Need to "stabilize" the remote get behavior; also force default to be the java implementation of wget for better portability and more consistent cross-platform behavior (helps debugging too!).

Allow URI's to point at ssh clients and support user/password authenticaton; also allow keys to allow automatic authentication.
Allow URI's to access password protected ftp sites. e.g.
ftp://papco:pap_dat@mrfrench.lanl.gov.
