ok, I found a workaround now: if I enter the characters I want to be considered part of the word, then hit , then close the preferences, the changes will take effect and are remembered.

ah, sorry for not noticing this, thanks.
unfortunately, it doesn't work though... when I put a character in there, then close the preferences, it has no effect, and when I go into preferences again my settings are gone.

when selecting a word by double-click, underscores are not treated as word characters (which is common practise in all applications and platforms I know), so you only select part of the word.
(this is e.g. quite annoying in the mysql client, due to the abundance of underscores in typical table and column names)

while it's great that iTerm supports select-to-copy and
mid-button paste (the lack of which is probably the
most annoying missing feature in OS X for a linux
switcher), it seems to use different buffers than
xterm. this becomes apparent when trying to use this
feature in vim: with mouse support turned on in vim,
copy/paste doesn't work, so you'll have to temporarily
turn it off to...
