The scanner driver started working for me again after upgrading to Jaunty Jackalope. I don't know how or why, it just worls now.
My current kernel version is 2.6.28-6.

I have the same problem.
I used a Dexxa 4800 parallell port scanner, it worked perfectly with Ubuntu Dapper Drake 6.04 with the as6e driver and scanimage
After I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.0.4 Hardy Heron, the scanner seldom scans an image entirely with scanimage.
The other times it stops at a different percentage so to speak. The scan procedure hangs, until you kill the power of the scanner...
