Kernel patch at https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2878608&group_id=69596&atid=525126 has been incorporated into 0.8.5-8 for kernels 2.6.24 and later. We still need the proper wacom_drv.so changes to make it into a true feature of linuxwacom.

You need to specify the styli with their own serial numbers in .fdi or xorg.conf to make use of the different tools. Hotplugging only deals with the default cases if you didn't define the tools in .fdi or xorg.conf. In your case, default for tools is to treat all tools of the same type (STYLUS, ERASER, CURSOR, etc) as one generic type of tools.
