    My strategy is to build my colony in the middle of the best nine square combinations I can find. I can't say that I have studied the game extensively enough to determine whether building on a resource is a good idea. I can say that if my first colony happens to be built on a food resource, then I am very happy.

    Dragoons are not cavalry. Dragoons are mounted infantry. Dragoons dismount to fight. Dragoons do not use cavalry tactics.

    FreeCol does not have cavalry, so it does not need infantry that can withstand cavalry! Tactics like pincers, flanking, surrounding, etc. have no effect either. It might be an interesting exercise to use the FreeCol engine to create a tactical warfare simulation game, but I see no need to turn FreeCol into such a game.
