Sorry, the above results were with this graphics board (S3 Trio), not the Riva 128.

3 of 5 points. Works.
Good quality on multisync monitor in both, framebuffer console and accelerated directfb.
No tearing artefacts when using integer stretching.
Geometry slightly off. Picture is too wide on all games I tried.
Heavy flicker on MAME messages (game info box).
Could not get it to work with a PAL TV and VGA-to-Scart cable.

I would like to collect information about the compatibility of Piapara LiveCD with graphics hardware. Maybe this can help deciding which card to use and/or pinpoint possible problems.
Please share your findings.

But I cannot seem to get it to work properly. I get the boot manager screen (syslinux) and boot messages, but after that I only get a black screen with some flicker and nothing more. The same ISOs do boot nicely from CD.
I suspected the order of the USB devices (boot...

Sorry, my suggestion above does not match the error you submitted. But probably your current directory was not the topmost of the Piapara installation hierarchy so the above solution does still apply.

Sounds like you tried to open piapara-livecd-generator.jar and your OS tried to run it without the -jar parameter. Use makecd.bat (Windows) or makecd.sh (linux, Mac?) instead and you should be fine.
