You need to enter the directory containing fonttools. Try this:
cd ~/_code/fonttools-2.2/
python setup.py install.

Yeah, I found that out the hard way, see my earlier comment. As long as bindir etc can be customised it is all good.

It would be nice to merge the colour edition of alex4. Unfortunately the only remaining copy of the colour edition is this PSP port of it:
