FTP isn't the only plugin that provides 'remote' file systems. So rather than having to set the option for every such plugin, the option is centralised so it applies to all or none.

jEdit uses the java printing api - it doesn't run a command that can be fixed like you suggest.
The problem could well be with java rather than jEdit.

The FindFiles plugin allows you to search for files like this. Once installed, there is a "Search for files..." option in the file dialog's plugins menu.

- password/phrase dialog boxes were not properly modal
- passphrases are remembered within a session - so you are only prompted once for a particular connection.
