To set up gmail imap, the wiki FAQ refers to:http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77662 which says:
Enter smtp.gmail.com as the Server Name and set the Port to 587.
Select User name and password and enter your full email address (including @gmail.com or @your_domain.com) in the User Name field.
Select TLS from the Use secure connection radio buttons and click OK.

Well it seems to work pretty well, but as the Zimbus FAQ discusses: the address fields don't not sync...there is a work around mentioned that I have not tried. I'm basically pretty happy.

What I finally did is ditch the default xandros on Eee PC and installed MEPIS 8.
I really should have done that a long time ago. :)
