It's a very curious problem indeed, and the first of its kind... and I'm afraid I just can't reproduce it, but then I don't have a Gentoo system.
Could you re-compile amsynth using `./configure --enable-debug` and then catpuring the output? `amSynth > ./amsynth.log`
Any other information would be helpful, e.g. which version of GCC and GTK-- you are building with.
