well photoshop is extremelly resource hungry and maybe this is the reason not sure about new versions of office but 2k wasn't too greedy.

yes windows XP API supports 32bit icons PARTIALLY (most people call this kind of support a PATCH) but imagelists(which are also windows API objects and are suposed to be like iconlists) have not been updated to support them.
and imagelists are used by most common controls including tab control (i.e. Toolbars,TabControls ... fail to display 32bit icons correctly)

Well I've contacted peacow and had some discussion about that.
nConvers uses a XML file to describe emotions and images are embeded as a base64 ancoded imagelist stream(i.e. can be when decoded to binary can be read by windows API)
In my opinion the best solution would be a XML description file in which is set if embeded or external images are used.

not having toolbar at all (and still working) shouldn't be possible :)
I guess wou've hided tha toolbar. Click F12 and choose "show toolbar" from the menu.

it says "fixed options version" actually build 78 had a wrong version of the .opt file in the package and didn't load it.
To your question:
Do you receive any message when you try to display the options?.

the reason is TabControl can use only Imagelist-s which do not support RGBA(RGB+Alpha chanel) images (If anyone knows how to do it please call)
Owner draw is not a good idea as it involves themes support for XP.
