In case this help, I am using JabRef version 2.5, and java -ersion returns:
$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_14"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_14-b08)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode)

I have set the external application for managing PDF files to /opt/bin/acroread
However when I click on the icon for the PDF link to a file (manually added), the status message says 'External viewer called', but nothing happens.
I also have tried to change /opt/bin/acroread to /usr/bin/xdg-open but to no avail.
Anybody having this problem?

Now works like a charm... Cannot see what has changed except for the content of Paperscope-1.0.zip.

I am trying to run Paperscope.jar but it fails:
PaperScope-1.0
OS: Linux
$ java-config -v
java version "1.6.0_03"
