Yesterday I did an emerge --sync && emerge world
I must admit, I did not have an eye upon what all was updated (3 packages in all), but the fftw libraries and I think gsl, too, were part of it.
I hope this information helps you to perhaps fix it, if possible in the ebuild.
When I started Grass 6.2.1 it opened the dialogue to choose the location, then the gui broke with the following output:

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "sci-geosciences/gpsbabe".
in the ebuild the line should look like this.
gps? ( sci-geosciences/gpsbabel )

i have gdal-1.3.1, the latest stable from gentoo

this is what happened after grass6.2.1 & gpsbabel were already compiled (everything after emerge -uavDN world yesterday evening).
