Using bluez simple discovery can determine device's RSSI and thus can be used for proximity events.
Here is a proof of concept, perhaps you can incorporate it in later version of BlueProximity.
Sorry for the ugly code, it is really meant only as POC.
This was successfully tested on Interpid Ibex (mentioning this because the API which is on bluez.org seems to be outdated)

Doesn't matter what it says, use latest beta and enabled OBEX and IRMC-SYNC (FMA options > Connectivity > Protocols)
