Actually, I realized that the above-mentioned problem happens only when trying to finalize in a MS Word97/2000/XP *.doc document. With the OOo native ODF text document format it works well.
So this is not so serious; I can just work in the *.odt and save later into *.doc (since, alas, my coworkers still stick to MS Windows and Office)

After recently updating bibus as of Update Manager's recommendation (I wish I wouldn't have done it), bibus one again has problems finalizing.
It seems the same problem as the one I had before reinstalling OOo, but in the terminal there are different error messages:

Yes, you should try to completely remove OOo (through synaptic, with "Mark for complete removal") and then reinstall it. Just to make sure, you could also remove bibus, although I tried this before, without reinstalling OOo, with no results.
I don't know why the reinstallation should do the trick, but obviously it does. It's...

It turned out to be some problems with OOo (I'm getting anyways a bunch of problems after upgrading to Karmic). After I completely removed it and reinstalled it, finalizing works now with bibus .

I don't think the problem is with the style, documents or the bibus directory. I tried before all of those you suggested, with no avail.
It might rather have something to do, as you suggested, with the version of bibus that is installed with a fresh install of Karmic. On one of my computers, I upgraded to Karmic from Jaunty. The bibus version was already upgraded to 1.5.0 when...

How do you install bibus 1.5.0 from the bibus repository, in Karmic?
I have the same problem, of bibus 1.5.0-1 not finalizing with Oo 3.1. It just gets stuck and I have to kill it.
I tried to reinstall bibus many times, but I always get 1.5.0-1 and the same problem of not finalizing. On the bibus site, there is only 1.5.0-1 in deb format (with which I get the same problem). I wouldn't know how...
