Sorry, the [] are in the wrong line. You can omit the starting/stopping of eclipse without using Coverlipse. You can not omit using Coverlipse :)

Here's the output. The steps to reproduce:
- Install Coverlipse
- Close Eclipse without using Coverlipse
[- Open Eclipse, all is ok. Use Coverlipse at least once]
- Close Eclipse
- Upon opening Eclipse, no editor can be opened.
This occured here with Eclipse 3.4M3 and is reproducible. The step in [] can be omitted IIRC.
The output:
