    Ah okay, I had not found the CTRL + drag for column select. That is half of what I was thinking. But the main part, is the ability to select a zero-width column of lines, begin typing and have the text appear on every line selected.     The closed-source, windows-only Crimson Editor, had a fantastic feature called column mode. By switching to this mode (using ALT+C in Crimson) you were able to select text within a rectangle rather than line by line. As well as this, you could select a column of lines (essentially a 0 by x rectangle) and type. The text would be typed onto every line selected. It may sound a bit rubbish...
