Newer versions of automake (>=1.6) don't call libtoolize internally as stated here:
http://www.gnu.org/software/automake/manual/automake.html#Error-required-file-ltmain_002esh-not-found
So there are basically two possible ways to go:
1. remove autogen.sh and use autoreconf shipped with autoconf or
2. tell autogen.sh to call libtoolize (see attached patch).
