The problem was the font used system wide ( X11 ) that apparently did not support the euro sign.

just tried your suggestion but the result is the same . I tried displaying the euro sign in pidgin ( so to be sure it was a gnome native app ) and it does not display correctly. I guess then it is a prob. in my configuration .

I tried to configure the reports . I was interested in the invoice report so I went in the settings->preferences , got to the Reports tab and tried the following :
uncheck the "Use my locale formatting"
typed in the "currency symbol" field : &euro
checked the invoice : the euro symbol comes out fuzzy
typed in the "currency symbol" field : €
checked the invoice : the euro...
