I managed to recreate this error by switching to polish 8bit encoding (iso-8859-2).
I added: bind_textdomain_codeset(PACKAGE, "UTF-8") in main.cpp which should make gettext return all strings the way we wanted.
I would appreciate it if you gave it a try. SVN rev. 46 or later.
