In this forum, the guy nicknamed seccon_mala (see below) provided a method for using iscsi Target with File I/O and a LVM block device juggling the file name created by the File I/O mode.
At the moment there is a (small?) group of people interested in implementing a "any Block IO mode" for an iscsi Target. These guys are also investigating where is the best starting point...

Hi all,
My name is Eugenio Maffione, currently a researcher on Content & Storage Networking Technologies in TILAB (previously named CSELT), the R&D branch of the Telecom Italia Group.
I'm deeply interested on implementing an iscsi target, as a modular software component of a storage gateway device.
This device should operate as virtualization gateway using the standard component we...

Yes! I mean, at the moment I think to have in the next weeks some time to spend on this activity. Now the questions are:
1) which target project is the correct for a this activity?
2) could we start from sunzen work?.

I'm currently investigating to modify an iscsi target in order to use with LVM and find the idea of Any Block Device mode very interesting.
Is there anyone developing on it? Is this the correct project or is it better to look in something else, more focused on target ?.

Thanks, now it works. Probably something was gone wrong with LVM.
Anyway, I think there is a noticeable overwork with FILE/IO.
Has anybody tried the target + LVM with Generic/IO or DISK/IO?
Eugenio.

The advice of Martin is very interesting... and I've tried it, but with my configuration it doens't work. I think I've correctly followed the instructions (FILE/IO, rmmod, delete file and create of a symlink with ssame name) but when I reload the target (insmod or target_install) I get a list of errors:
/var/log/messages
Nov 7 15:30:40 localhost kernel: scsi_target_init_module enter ... Nov.
