I guess you managed to use the driver by now, however I reply now just to leave a piece of documentation here also. After "make -f ..." you should load the driver with
# insmod stk11x.ko
however in your case you first need to upgrade your kernel, since 2.6.9 is too old AFAIK, and then recompile the driver (see README).

Now I've also tried ekiga, but I get even worse results (seems a b/w interlaced stream with a black band at the top)

BTW: camorama -D bails out with the dry message: "Unable to capture image (VIDIOCMCAPTURE)." (no errors nor warnings before that message)
