I've experienced this behaviour on Tiger and believe the cause is the same, it's to do with the way Boost (one of our dependencies) was built... not an issue with Aqsis itself.
This will be fixed shortly and an update released (1.6.0/1.6.1).

I believe a single backslash is treated as an escape character within the official RIB protocol, which is why either a forwardslash or double-backslash is necessary.
For this reason I've moved the topic to our "Feature Requests" tracker instead, where it can be considered for a future Aqsis release.

Thanks for the report.
For Aqsis 1.6.0 we switched to a more automated installer script, which is part of our build system (CMake), though it's a little more limiting than our previous efforts.
We plan to add the missing options/features for Aqsis 1.6.1.

Thanks for the bug report.
It appears our Windows build of libtiff doesn't have zlib (deflate) compression enabled, we will correct this shortly and possibly re-release Aqsis 1.6.0 on Windows.
