What's happening?

    vnc generally doesn't allow for longer passwords; it's not standard protocol.

    I guess a workaround for specifically ssh would be to start sshd with sudown while still at the host; that might cause all child command prompts to have administrative privileges?.

    I noticed you have support for launching sudown from the command prompt, but you leave us out to dry by forcing the gui for the password. Therefore, if using ssh, one would have to start a vnc session to type in the password. Is there a way to enter the password from the command prompt? If not, could you try to implement this?.
