on invidious.meflin.net's development (2.x) server, we can reliably crash the crossfire server by:
- reading a alchemy scroll
- directly from the ground
- in a spell-enable area
we verified a few of these conditions:
- it doesn't happen in a non-spell enabled area
- it doesn't happen when reading the scroll from personal inventory
- it doesn't happen for one other area-effect scroll...

it is hard to figure out the correct way to use "animate weapon", and the error message is incorrect and misleading. when you try to use it without a weapon marked, you get the message:
You need to wield a weapon to animate it.
this is wrong. wielding the weapon does not help. you must mark the desired weapon.
combined with the incorrect documentation on the crossfire.real-time.com...
