Both reverb and chorus effects are enabled by default, but when all reverb or chorus controller are set to 0 the reverb/chorus engine goes into idle mode e.g. they don't process audio until reverb/chorus controllers are set to something other than 0. But you have be sure that the midi songs you are playing are not setting the reverb level or sending channel reset message or sending GM reset...
