That's an interesting question. I thought about offering this option but came to the conclusion that it doesn't make much sense. The VSS option internally uses the unused area of the partition for updates/writes during the backup operation. So backing up this area with VSS in my opinion does not make much sense as you do not have control what data are contained on the backup in the unused blocks.

I can't give you a date at this time for the next version. I am currently busy with some other stuff. If you look at the thread "documentation of the format of disk images" I added some hints about the file format. The best I can currently suggest is to look at the source code. The files writing the file header are quite well documented. Let me know if you have more detailed questions.

this feature is not yet implemented. I am planning this for a future version. It would indeed be very useful. There exist some generic tool to read image files, but I doubt that it is possible to mount an ODIN image as a drive with those.

There is currently no technical documentation of the file format available, but the source code is quite well documented and might help you. It consists of a fixed header block, including to offsets of some parts with variable length (comment, bitmap of used cluster, content itself). The bitmap of used cluster might be the trickiest part as it is compressed with a run length encoding scheme...
