The attached code works just fine as soon as you actually redraw the window in the display callback. As it is, it still works properly but you think it doesn't because you're just seeing a dirty framebuffer accross the screen.
Add glClear(GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT); glutSwapBuffers(); in display, and you'll see that it works properly.
