Right now K-3D is in transition to "Generic Arrays", so probably developers would like to revisit this subject when the transition is finished.
Anyway, probably Bart you get you the right answer, but as i say, may be after the transition.

There is no .deb package yet. You may want to try to compile it from source.
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/k3d/k3d-source-0.7.11.0.tar.gz
