Well, the layout engine has got itself into an undefined state, which is why it asserts. It could be made more robust but, right now, there are a number of more important things to improve.
I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect the NSSymbol font to be present, as it's shipped with NetSurf. It should reside in !NetSurf.Fonts. Please ensure that this is the case.

Fixed in r8931. You'd do well to build libcss with OPTCFLAGS="-O2" for the moment -- by default, release builds will remove assert statements.

The framebuffer frontend is not designed for use in a windowing environment. The correct solution is to implement a frontend for the platform you're trying to use it on.

NetSurf on RISC OS use ^Q and ^W for scaling. These are the same key bindings as Draw uses.
