It is not 7-Zip catching, but your Windows OS catching the file listing (MFT) in your disk. This is needed to sort files by extension, know total number of files to compress, size, ...

It should be shown in the Add/Remove programs Windows applet. In my case, it does, so if in yours not, maybe it indicates a kind of problem in your enviroment.

Yes, you can use a resource editor to change the icon over the generated SFX, or if better to you, over 7-Zip SFX modules, so all the SFX created has the new icon.

I would say yes, because at least, you can unpack the contents, change the attribute bit, and repack again.

What would be the sense of that?
I mean, the x64 port is stated to be between 5-10% faster than its x86 counterparts, so why loosing that?.
