Tarifa firmware uses udhcp 0.9.8, this is the updated version of the one in the stock firmware.
DD-wrt uses the same udhcp package with updates, tomato uses the Dnsmasq dhcp server package.
Your idea that the problem has something to do with DNSMasq is interesting, I will keep that in my mind.

I have seen this problem too, but haven't found the source yet.
All text that is put into the text fields is converted to Linux style text automatic by a java program, the conversion happens just before saving.
My idea is that this error message has something to do with the (password) caching of the browser.
