2.7 basic install sometimes dies (I had three failures before a success)
each failure wrote a different number of files (between 5000 and 6000) before dying with a "file not found" error window
AND a windows "this program has encountered a problem" critical failure dialog.
after each failure I would just rename the "c:\programfiles\miktex 2.7" directory and restart the install.
