I'm afraid rebuild_zapel didn't work BUT the removal of the
contents of
zapata_additional.conf and a simple re-boot from the AMP was
the successful method for getting back to normal - sincere
thanks Andy.

I have a similar experience:
update of CentOS fom CLI causes * to die
when going to CLI and typing following (as prompted in help-aah):
yum -y update
it updates however when it is done asterisk when run dies with a code 1
further if you run "asterisk -vvvv" it reveals
ouch! error while writing audio data: broken pipe:e.

DEFINITION:
SER is ONLY a proxy server whereas Asterisk is an ipbx c/w a proxy sever should you need it.
COMMENT:
SER is almost foolproof and performs one main task - linking users together by searching an active register - it is simply a REGISTRAR of users devices allow them to call each other only.
No fancy pbx features - anything like that is handled by the users end device.
So...
