After a run of xdebug/kcachegrind it is rather clear where all the time goes: more then 93 % of the CPU time is spent inside SimpleXML.

I've tried out kmlmapserver and like many of it's features.
For my needs I've adapted it so that it could be called on command line, a change that I can contribute, if there is any interest.
Anyway, I do have some issues with the performance. I'm trying to export PostGIS borne data and it takes hours to complete.
