It looks like there's GCC3 vs. GCC4 incompatibility. I haven't tried every accessible version, yet 4.1 and 4.2 yield above symptom. 3.4 compiles just fine. I used:
CC=gcc-3.4 CXX=g++-3.4 ./configure
and then 'make'.
