I've redone the download, unpacked and file is there, looks like the install has worked. Thanks again for your help. I'll probably turn up with some other questions now. I'm going to try and use the Perl interface, for example...

Thanks, looking through my unpacked files, I haven't got an arch.gtc anywhere? Is there something I've forgotten to download? I've just tried to use: gtm_V53003_linux_i686_pro from January 14?

I'm very new, so probably there's a simple mistake. I unpacked the binary into /tmp, set the path (I believe) and tried sh configure to configure.
Here's some output:
[root@suzette gtm_V53003_linux_i686_pro]# echo $PATH
/usr/kerberos/sbin:/opt/nant/bin:/opt/mono/bin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/home/hbarnard/bin:.:./
