It is 10.6 specific. If the patch doesn't affect 10.5 or 10.4, then I would just use it.

The stable version would probably be better, complete backups are kind of important.
I have submitted a separate bug report on Python 2.5 & 2.6 because rdiff-backup doesn't compile on Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 so I was awaiting the update before I was going to submit an updated package.

Apparently Apple has a slightly different way of doing getgroups which makes the Fink python 2.5 and 2.6 fail with error messages like this (example from rdiff-backup):

You could make it part of the cron job that (should) already run daily and then you just set a bit in the db.
