No it's not abandoned. It was just a lack of time for hacking on it lately.
I'm reviewing patches and working on some features and bug fixes. Expect to have a new release soon.

With the default reports, you can get what you want if you create all your projects as children of a top project. Then, you can get your daily totals by invoking the "Daily" report for the top project.

I've also tried it on a Debian Sid (which currently has the same package version as Debian Testing) machine and it worked correctly.
Areu you able to display the Euro sign in other applications?
Since you said you were not able to type the euro sign correctly in the GUI, try running these commands in a terminal:
gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /apps/gnotime/Report/CurrencyUseLocale...

You can manually restore your backup data.
Gnotime's data file is named gnotime-data.xml and is located at the ~/.gnome2/gnotime.d directory.

What version are you using? In which distribution?
With current 2.3.0 in Ubuntu 9.04, I was able to type € in the currency field and it displayed correctly in the invoice report.

O módulo core poderia ter a implementação do InjectionManager e Factories padrão (que creio ser o que existe hoje no módulo web) e, nos casos em que seja necessário fazer algo de forma diferente do padrão, poderia-se implementar factories diferentes e definir o seu uso através de configuração.
