Actually I worked on ffmpeg last year. It was just a dependency issue while I was working on VLC 0.8. VLC 0.8 was working with the previous version of ffmpeg (and the little patch i commited) and wxwidget gtk. It does not work with ffmpeg 0.5.
The latest VLC versions 0.9 or up are using a more recent ffmpeg and QT4. And a few months ago, my friend told me Mac Ports added VLC 0.9.4 to the tree...

I'm not hyperactive anymore in Fink, just packaging games sometimes for fun. Feel free to maintain the package if you are able. Thank you again.

Is this ok for you ? the only modifications in patch are :
libavcodec/Makefile
libavcodec/imgconvert.c
I rebuilt packages depending from ffmpeg / libavcodec and it was ok.
It's time to release VLC 0.8.6 :)
